WHATWEBELIEVE
1. THE BIBLE
God has made Himself known through the teaching of the Bible, which is made up of the sixty-six books contained in the Old and New Testaments alone. Every word was originally given by inspiration of God and delivered without error. Because of this it is totally reliable in all it states and teaches and is completely sufficient in all matters of faith and living. Ultimately the teaching of the Bible finds its point of focus in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ and the salvation that is revealed in Him. That means that a proper use of it will lead a person to put their trust in Him.
Matthew 5:17-19; Luke 1:1-4, 24:27; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:16-21, 3:15-16; Revelation 22:18-21
2. GOD
There is only one God who is the Creator, Saviour and Judge of the whole world. He sustains everything according to His sovereign will and there is no power in existence that is greater than Him. All of history is under His full control and guidance. In the Bible God is portrayed as being immortal and unchangeable and not limited by the physical constraints shared by those He has made. He exists eternally in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. In His nature He is holy and therefore can be trusted to be perfect in love, justice, mercy and faithfulness.
Genesis 1-2; Psalms 8, 96; Isaiah 40:12-31, 44:6; Daniel 4:33-37; John 17:1-10; Romans 11:33-36; Ephesians 1:3-14; Revelation 1:8
3. CREATION AND THE FALL OF HUMANITY
God created all things out of nothing for the purpose of bringing glory to Himself. Men and women are made in the image of God and are appointed together as rulers and caretakers of His world. Their purpose is to obey, worship and love Him. Because their first parents rebelled against God the whole world has been deeply damaged by sin. Also every area of human nature has been corrupted so that all are without spiritual life and hostile to God. Everyone is therefore under the just condemnation of God and needs to be born again, forgiven and reconciled to Him.
Genesis 1-3; Psalm 51; Jeremiah 17:9-10; Matthew 15:17-20; Romans 5;12-21; Ephesians 2:1-10, 4:17-24; James 1:13-18
4. JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. In terms of His earthly life He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin and lived a sinless life in obedience to the Father. He taught with divine authority and on the cross died in the place of elect sinners, willingly bearing God's punishment for their sin. In this act He redeemed them by His blood. He rose from the dead on the third day and in His resurrection body ascended into Heaven where He is exalted as Lord of all. He intercedes for His people in the presence of the Father.
Luke 3:23-38; John 1:1-2, 4:6; Romans 3:25, 8:33, 9:5; Philippians 2:9; Hebrews 13:8; 1 John 2
5. SALVATION
Salvation is a free gift God gives to those sinners whom He has chosen before the beginning of the world. He alone enables them to repent of their sins and believe in Christ. He then justifies them and adopts them into His family. Salvation is completed when the believer is brought to perfection in Heaven. Although believers may fall into serious sin, the saving grace of God cannot ultimately be frustrated. This means that all who are converted will ultimately persevere in their faith in Christ and be eternally saved.
Luke 18:14; John 3:16, 10:25-29; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:23-24, 5:1-2; Ephesians 1:3-14, 2:8-9; Philippians 1:6
6. THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit has been sent from Heaven to glorify Christ and apply the work of salvation in the believer's experience. He convicts individuals of their sin, gives them spiritual life and enables them to have a saving understanding of the gospel. He dwells in the heart of all true believers thus making Christ real to them and brings assurance of salvation and increasing holiness of life. He also equips the Church for works of service by sovereignly giving a variety of spiritual gifts to its members.
Luke 3:16; John 16:7-15; Acts 2:33; Romans 8:15-16; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 2 Corinthians 3:18
7. THE CHURCH
The Universal Church consists of all people throughout history who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ. The local church is an expression of this Universal Church. Christ alone is the Head of the Church and His Word is to be the final authority in its affairs. In this connection its primary calling is to glorify God, preach the gospel, administer Baptism and the Lord's Supper and maintain the pastoral care and discipline of its members.
Mark 1:17; Acts 14:21-28, 20:17-38; Galatians 1:1-9; Ephesians 5:24-27; Colossians 1:18
8. BAPTISM AND THE LORD'S SUPPER
The ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper are visible signs of the truths of the Gospel which all believers are called to observe. Baptism, in which the participant is immersed in water on a profession of faith, does not create spiritual life but is a symbol of union with Christ and entry into His Church. The Lord's Supper is likewise a symbolic act in which believers share a meal that commemorates Christ's finished work on the cross. It also speaks of the Church's unity in Him and points us forward to the Day of His return. Both ordinances are for those true believers who are walking in close fellowship with the Lord and His Church.
Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 14:17-25; Luke 22:19-20; Acts 2:38-47, 8:26-39, 10:47; Romans 6:1-5; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
9. THE FUTURE
The Lord Jesus Christ will return in glory. This return will be a real historical event which will be seen by all the nations. At His return Christ will raise the dead to a new physical existence and judge the world in righteousness. All who have rejected Him will be sent to eternal punishment and all who have believed in Him will be welcomed into a life of eternal joy without sin, death or suffering. At the return of Christ the universe will be restored to perfection and God will dwell with His people forever. Although the Bible is silent as to the exact date of Christ's return we are told to live our lives in the expectancy that He could come at any moment.
John 5:24-29, 11:21-27, 14:1-6; Acts 1:6-12; Romans 8:18-25; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Titus 2:11-14; Revelation 1:4-8, 19:1-9; 21
